Here are my Areca Palm Trees ( Dypsis lutescens ). They are doing very well. This is what I have just planted all around the perimeter of the yard. The Areca Palm is native to Madagascar as well. It seems that every cool plant is from Madagascar. I really want to visit Madagascar, I bet it is breathtaking. When this palm reaches the height of 3-6 feet it starts to produce fruit. The fruit is like any other palm fruit with the exception that you can eat the orange fleshy part. It is very sweet, maybe even to sweet.

Hello let's garden!
Thanks for your most helpful information. How long did it take for your Areca Trees to grow from your small start to the larger ones that I saw in your picture?
We are considering using them also as a privacy fence but wanted to know if they were a fast growing tree. Thanks for any help you can give. best regards, photop

You can expect 3-5 years for a really nice one Photop. Water and fertilizer for faster growth!

You should check out some tropical clumping bamboo. There are a few types that accent areca palms really well. Clumping bamboo stays where you plant it. Google Blue Chungii bamboo or try Dendrocalamus minor 'amoneus' bamboo. Both species have a blueish white powder on the culms similar to the adult areca palm.I think as a tropical palm person you may be pleasantly surprised. I grow several types of bamboo myself. Good luck my friend and happy growing.

BTW the pics of the buddah belly isn't Bambusa ventricosa. The pic is Bambusa vulgaris 'wamin'. Wamin gets swollen internodes all of the time(like the one in the pic) It only grows to around 15-20 feet tall where as the Bambusa ventricosa gets 55 feet tall and only swells when under stress. Two VERY different bamboos.
