Pineapple Project

I am attempting my first Pineapple project today. I went to our local Farmer's Market on Saturday and picked up a beautiful Pineapple. When I got home I immediately started eating it, it was extremely delicious! Then I thought to myself, I should try to grow this.

I pulled the top off the pineapple by grabbing it and twisting while I pulled. The top came right off. Then I pulled the bottom leaves off until I exposed about an inch to an inch and a half of stalk. If you do not do this you will run a very high chance of rotting your Pineapple.

After pulling the leaves off, I placed the Pineapple top upside down on my counter top for 4 days. I did this to better my chances against rot. It can take 2 days or even up to a week of drying. You are trying to achieve a callous, or dried look.

Once my pineapple was calloused over I applied a little root hormone and placed it in soil. You do not want to place all of the stalk in the soil. Pineapples rot easy, so you want to lay it on the soil at an angle with a small part in the soil.

Once you see roots starting to form then you want to re-pot completely in the soil and wait. It can take up to 2 years to produce a Pineapple. On that note if you want to eat Pineapple regularly you need to have several plants going that were started at different times. Here are some pictures of my Pineapple project!!
