While I was at the Farmer's Market last weekend I Scored again!! I was given this beautiful Ginger for free!! It is a Hidden Ginger ( Curcuma petiolata ). The bloom is a beautiful pinkish color and the leaves are amazing looking too!! The Hidden Ginger likes full shade to partial shade and has average water needs. This is a great addition to my collection!! Here are a few pictures of my new Aussie Plume Ginger!! Enjoy!!

I love free plants! They make my day. And this one is beautiful!

Great Site! It reminds me of the days of my youth growing up in Miami. My mother got into orchids and almost every tree in the yard was covered with some type of orchid in it.

Just one word of caution for you though . Another thing that reminded me of my youth was your new ginger plant and the two days I tried to cut down and dig out the ginger plant that got out of hand. Ginger gets big and grows fast and does not like to leave once it is growing so be careful where you plant it!

I agree with glenn bronner. Be careful where you plant your ginger. I have Pinecone Ginger planted behind my house under overhang of roof & there is a big oak tree to shade. Now I can't dig it out. It does multiply therefore it walks. It is huge & getting bigger. Must somehow get it out.

Thanks for the warnings, I was not aware of that. I will put some more thought into it now!!

I've had hidden gingers for years and I've never had a problem. In fact, I wish they were more agressive - I'd love to have a bunch of them. They definitely do better in deep shade. If they do get out of hand, dig up a root with a bud and give to a friend - it is a great passalong plant.
