Today I would like to introduce my favorite tree into my yard. My favorite tree is the Red Flowered Royal Poinciana Tree (Delonix regia). This Magnificent Tree is also known as the Flamboyant Tree, Flame Tree, Peacock Flower and Gulmohar. This Tree grows rather fast up to heights of 20'to 30'feet tall and should be spaced 12' to 15' feet apart. The Royal Poinciana Tree grows best in full sun exposure with regular watering until the tree is established.Once the Tree is established it prefers somewhat of a drought during the winter months. I have heard that they will not bloom in pots. When I see these beautiful Trees I am reminded of Japanese Bonsai Trees. They look the same only they are much bigger. Back on August 1st 2008, I placed 11 Red Flowered Royal Poinciana ( Delonix regia ) seeds in a pot. 1o out of the 11 have sprouted! I am very excited about these sprouts because this is one of my favorite tree of all.
The Royal Poinciana Tree can grow to heights of 20-30 feet tall and should be spaced anywhere from 12-15 feet apart. The Royal Poinciana Tree enjoys full sun exposure and is drought tolerant making it ideal for xeriscaping.

I can't believe that I haven't done a post on this magnificent specimen yet. It must have somehow fallen between the cracks....It happens. The good part is that it is here now... The Ptychosperma waitianum Palm Tree. I haven't been able to find much information on this Palm Tree but I have seen it called the Giant Palm Tree, Ivory Coast Palm Tree, and the Raffia Palm Tree. I found that it grows to about 15' feet tall in full sun and should be planted 15'-20' feet apart. The Ptychosperma waitianum is often confused with the Ptychosperma burretianum which is a clustering form where as the P. waitianum is solitary or single trunking. If you have any information on this Palm Tree I would love to know what you know.
Back in January 2008 I received some seeds in the mail. I began germination on January 23, 2008 to be exact. I saw 2 sprouts on March 17, 2008. Only one survived. I have been babying this little guy for almost a year now and it is only about 5 inches tall.

Back on 8-1-2008, I placed 20 Dwarf Poinciana ( Caesalpinia pulcherima ) seeds in a pot. I did not do anything special to them. Exactly 7 days later on 8-8-2008 there were many sprouts. I would have to say that the seeds of a Dwarf Poinciana germinate very fast and easy.
Dwarf Poinciana trees only grow to heights of about 8 feet tall. If you are planting several of them you should space them about 6 feet apart. These trees are most happy when grown in full sun to partial shade and they have average water needs. If you like Royal Poinciana trees but just don't have the room for them then this is the tree for you. In the following pictures I will walk you through my potting steps.

Basil is a very fast and easy to germinate. I was given some pieces of Basil that had seed pods all over it the other day. They told to just stick these sticks in the pot and watch what happens.
So I went home with my Basil sticks and I pulled a couple seed pods off and sprinkled them throughout the pot and just placed the rest right on top of the soil. It has been about 4 days since I did this. I went out this morning and to my surprise there are loads of sprouts!!
I really like the way Basil smells in the garden and I also use it a lot when I am cooking so to be able to go outside and pick fresh Basil will be great!! Here are some pictures of my new Basil sprouts!!

Here are a few pictures of my Buddah Belly Bamboo ( Bambusa ventricosa ) sprouts as of 5-12-2008. They are doing fantastic!! They have all shot up a second sprout!! This is very exciting to me as this is my favorite Bamboo!! Enjoy the pictures!!

Christmas Palm Tree Sprouts Update!! ( Veitchia merrillii )

I sprouted 10 Veithchia merriillii seeds on Feb. 5 2008 and 3 more followed a few days later for a total of 13. These were the first seeds I have ever sprouted!! They are doing great!! They look very healthy! I have them place in an area that receives about 20% sun and is bright shade the rest of the time.
Here are some pictures of my very fist sprouts at 3 months old!! Enjoy!!

I have figured out that the best way to germinate seeds is to forget about them. This may not work for everyone, but for me I have been very successful with it!!
When I checked my incubators ( Click here for more information on my incubators) I noticed lots of green inside of them. Since my incubators are numbered I had to run in the house and get my legend.
Once I deciphered the numbers into which seeds they were I began to transplant them into pots. Here are the pictures:
The first 3 pictures are of Bambusa ventricosa or Buddah Belly Bamboo. This is one of my favorite Bamboo's. You can click here for more information and why I am fond of this Bamboo!!
The following 3 pictures are of Ravenala madagascariensis or Travellers Palm Tree. These are beautiful trees that resemble Birds of Paradise. If you want more information on the Travellers Palm click here.
The next 4 pictures are of Pheonix canariensis or Canary Date Palm. I have picked these seeds from a Hybrid Canary Date Palm. Click here to link back to my post on 14 sprouts!!!
