I was given this Bromeliad as a gift from my neighbor about a year ago. We never knew the name of it and I never really did any research to find out. That all changed when I was out back cooking dinner on the grill. I looked over and was struck by this awesome bloom sticking out of the middle of it. I have never seen this particular bloom before. I grabbed my camera and snapped a few pictures. Then I went and did some research and found that the name of this Bromelaid is the Urn Plant (Aechmea fasciata). The Urn Plant also goes by the names Silver Vase Bromeliad or Aechmea.
The Silver Vase Bromeliad doesn't need much attention at all. There is no need to water the soil as long as you keep water in the Urn. It is recommended that you replace the water in the Urn once a week. That is really the only thing you need to do for this plant.
The Aechmea will not produce seeds. It will grow pups that you can remove after they have reached a third or half the size of the mother plant. Simply plant these pups on there own and they will grow.

I think bromeliads are so great, their flowers look like something out of Dr. Seuss. Nice to see them growing in the ground, instead of a greenhouse pot.
That's a fancy bloom. Looks like a pink aloe plant. Looking closely I can see some pods of some sort towards the bottom. I don't think it's done putting on it's show just yet!!
Such a very lovely shade of pink! You had me on edge, just waiting to see a photo of it as I read each paragraph! It is pretty and a good thing you were able to capture its bloom. What a nice surprise it must have been;-)
Thanks Jan! I will update very soon.
