Well, it has been waay to long since my last post. I am very sorry about that. I have been super busy lately. But rest assure I am still hard at work creating my tropical paradise.
I have been given a gift from a dear friend of mine yesterday. She picked this little gem up at a plant sale over a year ago. I was at her house when I saw it. It was a Variegated Elephant Ear ( Colocasia esculenta 'Elepaio' ). I have never seen one before and I instantly fell in love. I asked her to break me one off when it began to throw pups and she replied " No problem". Well to my surprise her son hand delivered it to me yesterday.
To be honest , it was over a year ago since I have seen this Variegated Elephant Ear and I had completely forgotten about it. So you can imagine my surprise when it was handed to me. That made it extra special to me. I will take extra good care of this one!
The Variegated Elephant Ear ( Colocasia esculenta 'Elepaio' ) can survive in sun to shade conditions and is a tropical plant. It is a rare Elephant Ear that is named after the rare Hawaiian fly catcher bird 'Elepaio'. This tropical plant requires consistently moist soil which makes it great for bogs and water gardens.

I just wanted to take a moment and tell you about my favorite seafood market. Pelican Seafood Company in Fort Pierce Florida is hands down the best seafood market around.

I have finally acquired the seeds of the Hibiscus sabdariffa Jamaican Cocktail Red( Roselle). I have long wanted this form of Hibiscus plant. This form is extremely beneficial.
The Hibiscus sabdariffa plant is native to the Old World Tropics ( East Indies ). There are many different varieties of the Hibiscus plant. This one in particular has all the qualities I am looking for.
This extremely wide ranged plant is useful on many different levels. In Mexico they use the dried sepals and calyces to make a tea known as Jamaica Tea, pronounced ha-mi-ca, by boiling them and adding sugar. This is my main reason for wanting this plant. I tried some Jamaica Tea and fell in love with it! This Jamaica Tea is know for lowering blood pressure too which is an added bonus to its mouth watering flavor.
In the West Indies the Hibiscus sabdariffa plant is used for making all kinds of goodies. They make jelly, syrup, gelatin, pudding, cakes, ice cream, butter, wine, sauces and they flavor rum with it also. They also use the tender stalks in their salads and they use it to season their curry. They even use the seeds of the Roselle plant as an aphrodisiac coffee substitute. Talk about a pick me up! This plant is definitely a must have given all of its great uses.

Rainbow Gum Eucalyptus Tree ( Eucalyptus deglupta ) Update 3
1 comments Posted by Lets Plant at 5:01 PMI know I just posted an update on my Rainbow Gum Eucalyptus Tree (Eucalyptus deglupta) just the other day but I didn't post a picture of the whole tree. This Eucalyptus Tree is growing like crazy! When I planted it in March of 2010 it was only two feet tall. Now just a little over one year later my Rainbow Gum Eucalyptus Tree has soared up to about ten feet tall! It is about time to for my second update on my Bismarck Palm Tree ( Bismarckia nobilis ). I purchased this gorgeous Palm Tree about 3 years ago at the height of about 3 feet tall. It was stained from well water and needed some attention. If you would like to read my previous posts containing information and view the pictures of this Palm Tree please CLICK HERE.
At any rate my last update was June of 2008. The magnificent Palm Tree was still around 3 feet tall. Since then alot has changed. Steady fertilizer and proper care has driven my Bismarck Palm Tree to grow to a height of about 6 feet! All of the well water stain is gone and it has filled out like a champ.
Here is a picture of my stunning Bismarck Palm Tree (Bismarckia nobilis).

I am very excited to announce my new Oncidium Orchid Plant the Mtssa. Shelob " Tolkien " Orchid. If you want to see all of my Orchids please CLICK HERE. I scored this beauty at my local big box store but at any rate scored. This Orchid caught my eye as I walked past it and pretty much dragged me in. I was not there to purchase a new Orchid Plant.
It seems to be a fitting name for this Orchid. The Mtssa. Shelob " Tolkien ". It reminded me of something out of a Tolkien book. The leaves even look like something of great fantasy, and being that it dragged me in as I walked passed, it must be magical.
Well come to find out after some research this magnificent Orchid is actually named after J.R.R. Tolkien. I am pretty sure it has much to due with the spidery looking petals and the Velvety Burgundy and yellow mixture with pink toned tongues. This aromatic Orchid is a must have for any Orchid collection.

The Mtssa. Shelob 'Tolkien ' is a hybrid Orchid made up of the genus species Miltonia and Brassia,( Mtssa. Olmec x Brassia Edvah Loo ). It enjoys medium light and medium water about 3 times per week. This Orchid also enjoys a light misting on the leaves as well. Fertilizing twice a month is healthy.
The Mtssa. Shelob 'Tolkien' Orchid can have multiple spikes all producing anywhere from 6-8 flowers per spike. The flowers range from 4-5 inches from top to bottom. This Orchid was awarded the AOS award for merit in 1998.

My Rainbow Gum Tree is finally showing its magnificent colors in the bark. This is what I have been long awaiting. The entire reason I planted this tree. The colors showing now are green, orange, and brown. This tree must be very happy with its location because it is growing very well. Here are the pictures I have taken of my Rainbow Gum Eucalyptus Tree's ( Eucalyptus deglupta ) Beautiful color changing bark.

It is definitely time for an update on one of my favorite Palm Trees, the Ptychosperma waitianum. This Palm Tree is a flamethrower Fishtail Palm Tree. As most Fishtail Palms are clustering Palms, this one is solitary. You can see my previous post and pictures by CLICKING HERE.
Back in January 2008 I received some seeds in the mail. I began germination on January 23, 2008 to be exact. I saw 2 sprouts on March 17, 2008. Only one survived.
Since Germination almost 3 years ago, my Ptychosperma waitianum Palm Tree is all of 9 inches tall. It is growing very slowly. Here are a few pictures to show you the progression. Now you can see the "Flame" in the fronds.
This first picture shows the fronds awesome coloration.

Rainbow Gum Eucalyptus Tree ( Eucalyptus deglupta ) Update

I planted this amazing tree in the ground March 22, 2010. That puts it in the ground for 7 months. When I planted my Rainbow Gum Eucalyptus it was 2 feet tall. In 7 months my Rainbow Gum Tree has doubled in size. Here are some pictures that I have taken to show you.
This first picture was taken right after I planted it in the ground. I want to apologize for the picture quality as I took it with my phone and for some reason only took 1 picture.

It has been one and a half years since my last post on my Misi Luki Banana Tree. If you want to read all posts on my Misi Luki Banana Tree CLICK HERE. I aquired this Banana Tree from my buddy Brandan. We broke off a pup from his and transplanted it into my yard. It is finally producing Bananas! Now I have two Banana Trees producing. This is great, I love to see my hard work pay off. Here are some pictures of the Misi Luki that I took on 9-27-2009.

I planted my Williams Hybrid Banana Tree April 21, 2008 at the height of about 2 feet tall. If you want to read all posts on this Banana Tree CLICK HERE. Now only a year and a half later I have my first Bananas forming. This is my first out of all my Banana Trees to start producing Bananas. I am finally starting to see the benefits of all my hard work. I have two sets of pictures to share with you today. The first set is from September 3, 2009 and the second set is from September 7, 2009.

A while back I purchased a Red Latan Palm ( Latania lontaroides ). I finally put it in the ground yesterday. The Red Latan Palm can grow to heights of 40 feet tall. They also require cosistantly moist soil and full sun to grow at their best. It is a good idea to space them about 12 feet apart when planting multiples. The Red Latan Palm is native to the Mascaregne Islands which are 200kms from Mauritius.
Here are some pictures of my new addition to the front yard.
Notice the red edges hencing the name Red Latan Palm. They are very sharp too.
